An allergy is an abnormal reaction of the body to substances from the outside environment. Such substances may be taken into the body through the skin (insect bites, carpet, animal contact, etc.); by mouth (foods and beverages); or through the nose and lungs (pollens, house dust, animal dander, etc.). The substances that set off the allergic reaction are called allergens.

Allergies can cause asthma, allergic rhinitis, urticaria, eczema, and hay fever with symptoms ranging from a runny nose or eyes, wheezing episodes, nasal or chest congestion, frequent colds, cough, bronchitis, itching, sinus headaches, post-nasal drip, frequent sore throats, recurrent ear infections, burning and itching of the eyes to bouts of sneezing. Asthma is a complex disorder of airways. Several factors may cause asthma, and one of them is allergic reaction.
